Originaire de Londres, Adwoa Aboah a grandi aux côtés de Cara Delevingne (avec qui elle partage un tatouage représentant une moitié de cœur), Lily Donaldson ou encore Suki Waterhouse. Fréquentant les meilleures écoles privées de la capitale britannique, elle est vite repérée et débute sa carrière de mannequin en posant pour une multitude de magazines indé et défilant pour des marques de grandes envergures comme Topshop ou encore H&M. Par la suite, elle est castée pour les shows Fendi, Marc Jacobs ou encore Alexander Wang et Fenty lors de la Fashion Week printemps-été 2017. Un sans-faute, qui lui assure la solide réputation de top en vogue. Parallèlement de son ascension de top, elle connait aussi quelques années houleuses entre cures de désintoxication en Arizona, dépression et tentative de suicide. Aujourd’hui sobre, elle est à l’initiative d’un programme éducatif destiné aux adolescentes : Gurl Talks. Par le biais de groupe de discussion, vidéos inspirantes, interviews… elle imagine un espace permettant de mettre en lumière des sujets particulièrement délicats à l’adolescence : la santé mentale, les addictions, les troubles alimentaires, mais qui s’interroge également sur le rôle des femmes dans la société (rencontrant l’association free the nipple ou encore Len Dunham). Adwoa Aboah has opened up about her personal struggles with depression, addiction and her attempted suicide in October last year. In a courageous video interview, Adwoa takes off her clothes while speaking frankly about her experiences as a symbolic demonstration of style not being about what you wear, but about being comfortable in your skin.
"I think if you don't like being in your skin, it doesn't matter how many times people say you're beautiful, how many jobs you get, or whatever it is - I just didn't want to be Adwoa," she explained. Shedding light on the pressures she's faced working in the industry, the West Londoner shared how her job affected her own self-perception, admitting that it was tough "losing out on jobs and being judged on your appearance. I definitely grew a second skin and got used to it but more so now I realise that it definitely contributed to a lot of the things I feel about myself."
Adwoa is currently fronting Calvin Klein's spring/summer campaign alongside FKA Twigs and Kendall Jenner, which was lensed by her boyfriend photographer Tyrone Lebon. She admitted she feels most beautiful when he photographs her: "Because it's me, versus all the make-up or pretending to be someone else." The model also touched on her Gurls Talk project, confirming that she is in the process of setting up a formal charity for her feminist initiative. "Gurls Talk is my baby," she explained. "It's just about opening up a space within schools where we as women and girls can talk about whatever we want."
