For anyone paying attention to the runways this season, Julie Hoomans probably looks familiar. The dainty Dutch model has been on the runway for everyone from Altuzarra to Versace in the past three weeks, and kicked off Paris with turns at Anthony Vaccarello, Dries Van Noten, and Maison Margiela. Taking on such a vigorous lineup might be daunting for some models, but for Hoomans, who has walked more than 80 shows in the past 12 months, it’s just another stellar season. Discovered while shopping with friends in Holland, Hoomans made her debut at Prada Spring 2014 and hasn’t slowed down since—which suits her just fine. “Being on the catwalk is actually so much fun; it really gives you a boost of adrenaline to be out there in front of the audience and the cameras,” says Hoomans, via email from Paris. “It’s your time to shine! When I just started modeling, I used to feel super nervous right before a show, but that is definitely gone now.” As part of the current Dutch model wave, Hoomans doesn’t have to look far to spot her friends backstage. “I spend a lot of time with Maartje Verhoef—we’ve been friends since I first started modeling. There are so many other girls I like to hang out with, though, like Ine Neefs, Rianne Van Rompaey, Vera Van Erp, Romy Schonberger,” says Hoomans. Though modeling has introduced her to several pals from around the globe, there’s something special about the Dutch connection. “I guess it’s because Dutch girls are usually really down-to-earth, and people like that,” says the model, “Oh, and we’re generally tall—I guess that helps, too!” Though her season has been filled with highlights, for Hoomans, one of the best moments was going back to Prada, where it all started. “The Prada team is such an amazing team of inspiring people! Every time I work with them, I’m just as excited as the first time,” says Hoomans. “I respect Miuccia Prada and the rest of her team so much for being able to translate her view of what’s currently going on in the world into new collections. It’s an honor to be able to play a tiny part in that creative process.” As a fan, Hoomans finds herself most engaged when she’s simply enjoying the inventiveness that surrounds her. “I get inspired every day by the little things around me! By the stories of other girls I talk to and by watching the amazing people I get to work with.” Since wrapping up high school last year, Hoomans has racked up work with some very impressive talents, but the runway isn’t her only focus. A fan of cooking, reading, and playing guitar, Hoomans hopes that she’ll be able to continue learning, no matter where her career takes her. “I would love to continue my education, but at the same time I’m currently really enjoying this amazing opportunity of discovering the world and meeting great people,” says Hoomans. “[In the future] I hope I’ll be doing something that makes me happy—that’s definitely the most important thing for me.”
