Calvin Klein Collection F/W 13.14 NYC (Exclusive) Memorable Moments F/W13 MAGGIE MAUER (IMG) HOMETOWN: Potsdam, New York WHERE YOU SAW HER THIS SEASON: Calvin Klein, Missoni, Margiela MAGGIE’S MEMORABLE MOMENT: One of my favorite moments was me and Dana, Nian Fish and Francisco Costa, we had to ride the freight elevator to go look at the runway. It was 2 o’clock in the morning on Valentine’s day and we’re all just loopy and laughing. Funny that they called that dress "very Carolyn Bessette." Considering that Maggie is very reminiscent of Carolyn and in the Nymag interview she mentions Carolyn again. Name: Maggie Maurer Agency: Elmer Olsen Model Management / IMG Worldwide Age: 23 Height: 5’10? Place of Origin: Potsdam, New York Ethnic Origin: Hungarian/ Ukranian small amount of Cherokee Birthsign: Scorpio. Maggie Maurer was at work when she got The Call ... from Elmer Olsen, the agent responsible for launching Daria Werbowy's career, among others. Olsen and his crew had been trying to track down the 23-year-old, Potsdam, New York, native for the better part of a week after a friend submitted pictures of her — without mentioning it. From that point, Maggie moved up quickly: She booked a Calvin Klein exclusive for fall 2013, signed with IMG, and took turns for a handful of other brands including Maison Martin Margiela, Missoni, Cédric Charlier, Manish Arora, and Antonio Marras. She recently stopped by the Cut offices to discuss growing up with six siblings, the model walk vs. the natural walk, and some of the strange things she finds online. Tell me about your childhood. I'm from upstate [New York], a place called Potsdam — it's six hours away and on the Canadian border. It's where I was born and raised. There are seven kids in my family and I'm in the middle. The oldest is my brother Martin, then I have two older sisters, a younger brother, and two younger sisters. And my one sister and I are only thirteen months apart, so we were always best friends and did everything together. We were all home-schooled. And everybody still lives in Potsdam. Are any of your siblings into modeling? My younger sister Melody has a photographer friend, and he's the reason any of this even happened to me. I started working with him at a grocery store and it was so cold — I would wear two pairs of pants, a big sweatshirt, another jacket over it, a scarf, a hat, and gloves, and he would stand across from me and say, "We need to take pictures sometime." So we would do little projects; there's not a lot of people in our town who are interested in fashion. And he sent some photos to Elmer Olsen without telling me, and here I am. Did Elmer sign you right away? Well, my friend sent the pictures to Elmer, but Elmer couldn't reach him by e-mail. So for a week, he had everybody in his office trying to find me on the Internet, and they finally came across my Facebook and figured out the name of a clothing store I was working at. And they called the store as I was picking up the phone to call somebody else, so it didn't even ring. I heard, "You don't know who I am, but I know who you are." [laughs.] Growing up, was modeling on your radar? Yes and no. I've been this tall since I was 13 so people always told me I should be a model. And I love the art aspect of it. But then, my kind of control-freak side would kick in, and be like, No, you have no money, because I've always had to support myself. I couldn't move to New York City ... no one really understands what it takes. Everyone thinks you become a model and it's suddenly glamorous. I was too logical for that. But I did always think I would take the opportunity, if it were presented to me. What went through your mind at the Calvin Klein casting? I'm more outgoing than most of the other girls — you're not sure if you should talk to them, because they're all so quiet and they have their headphones on and I'm just like, Hi! [laughs.] We were sitting in the hallway for a while and there was one girl who said, "This is ridiculous. It was supposed to be at noon," and, "I don't have time for this," and she left, and I was like, Do you know where you are right now? [laughs.] But working with Francisco Costa was amazing. And when I finally walked, with the cameras and the lights, you can't see anyone, which takes away some of the nervousness. How was Margiela? It was interesting — at the show, they said, "We don't want a 'model walk,' we just want it to be natural, as though you're walking down the street and nobody's watching you." And, obviously, you're more critical of yourself and you see things that other people don't see, but I think the pictures and the video from that show are the best ones. What do you do in your spare time? I live on the water, so when it's nicer outside, I go fishing — my boyfriend's sister and her boyfriend live across the street from us, and they have an old seventies houseboat, so we'll hang out and tan, and party a little bit. [laughs.] I'm a North Country kind of girl. I drive a truck, I have two dirt bikes, a three-wheeler, a boat, kayaks. I was thinking about getting a motorcycle this summer, but I'm not sure if I'll be home now. Have you been able to go back upstate since the end of fashion month? Once. My mom actually wrote two front-page articles about me in the local paper. Honestly, I didn't even read them because I was so embarrassed. They were like, Potsdam Girl Making it Big ... Walking the Runways for Calvin Klein, Now on to Milan and Paris, or something like that. If you could meet anyone, dead or alive, who would it be? I don't know why, but the Kennedys are running through my mind — Carolyn Bessette, or JFK, Jr., or President Kennedy. Do you ever Google yourself? Not before all of this, but I do now! My boyfriend found this post comparing models to animals, David Attenborough–style [ed. note: here] — David Attenborough does the narration for Planet Earth. The first one is Jessica Stam and a lion, then there's me and a giraffe ... Gisele is in there somewhere ... it's me and all of the top girls. It's hilarious. More [HERE]. Name: Maggie Maurer Agency: Elmer Olsen Model Management / IMG Worldwide Age: 23 Height: 5’10” Place of Origin: Potsdam, New York Ethnic Origin: Hungarian/ Ukranian small amount of Cherokee Birthsign: Scorpio How discovered: I have a friend from home (Tom Newton) who is a photographer. We met working at a small grocery store a few years ago and he would always beg me to do a shoot with him so I finally did, and it sort of became a regular thing. For years he would say we should send these in, and then in December, he did (without my knowledge.) He sent just a few to Elmer Olsen without any other information or way to contact me. So they used the good old Internet to track me down and found out where I was working. I had picked up the phone to make another call, it didn’t even ring, and on the other end was Elmer… the rest is history, haha Favorite things: Shoes, chocolate, hugs, my dog Cooper, warm sunny days, my truck, anything you can drive, meeting amazing people (I thrive on energy), walking my dog barefoot outside at home in the summer… I could go on and on and on Favorite music, band: I’m really indecisive, I don’t see why there has to be just one? Some bands I could never get sick of though: The Black Keys, Rilo Kiley, Ray LaMontagne, Muse, Iron and Wine, Jonathan Rice, Foo Fighters, NIRVANA, Blindside, Coldplay, Bright Eyes, Feist, Cold War Kids, Kings of Convenience, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Sigur Ros … If I’m driving I like country (I actually ALWAYS like country!). If I’m dancing I like hip hop … think you’ll see a trend here that I have a really hard time picking favorites Favorite movie, tv show: Band Of Brothers series, Meet Joe Black .. every movie Will Ferrell has ever been in or Jason Statham cause I love to laugh but I also like to kick ***… sooooo, to finish it off I’ve gotta go with The Notebook! HA What would you be doing if you weren’t modeling? I would still be the manager at The Isle Of You in Potsdam, New York. I would get up every day to help people I care for with their homes and gardens and anything else they needed. Every day the same thing from 8 in the morning till 8 at night. I’m a creature of habit and routine… It’s amazing how quickly life can change. So full of surprises and unexpected things you can’t control… You have to just keep your mind open and focus on positive things and good positive things will happen to you…. sorry that went a little off topic haha! What’s something uncool that you love anyway? The color brown Favorite modeling experience so far? The whole Calvin Klein experience was amazing!! The first time going up the elevator, door opens to the all white room with the black letters CALVIN KLEIN, it’s like entering a castle or something… I mean, it’s fashion royalty. To be able to witness the collection come to life, practically on my body, is just unbelievable (I still can’t comprehend it sometimes). Watching the thought process of Francisco and Camilla as they choose a fabric or color or whatever it may be is amazing. Spending every day there for the week leading up to the show, all the late nights spent huddled in a bathrobe with Dana and Manuela, all the walks back and forth, the meals around the table, informing Francisco who Taylor Swift is as we watched the Grammys, having my hair chopped off by the number one stylist in the world, to the day of the show riding down the elevator with Carolyn Murphy (sweetheart) telling me I’ll do great… All these things no one can ever take away and I said even if nothing else ever happens to me, this experience is one I wouldn’t trade for the world. The memories created, that being the first show to do in my career I am grateful beyond words … I mean, seriously, I still have to pinch myself sometimes. To do the same thing that Kate Moss did at the beginning of her career, I mean, come on? AMAZING What’s the best thing about your hometown/country? Summertime All the fresh local food, fishing, laying out on my dock by the water, the air… Favorite artist (any kind): Colin Prahl, Melvin Sokolsky Place you would love to visit: Greece, Fiji Currently you’re obsessed with/about: How what you eat and put in your body effects everything about you, not just hunger. How I can control/improve how I look and feel based on eating the right things. The book Healing Foods by Dr. Duke changed my whole mind set on why it’s so important to pay attention and know what your food is doing to you and for you. And spreading kindness to the world (always). A smile, hello, how are you? All these little things we do everyday could make a giant difference – heck, it could change someone’s life… give them hope that the world isn’t all bad – you never know how what you might do could change someone’s life, good or bad. So treat everyone how you want to be treated. You get what you give, and I choose peace and love |
