It makes sense that the offspring of Johnny Depp and Vanessa Paradis would have a sharp sense of personal style—and perfect cheekbones to boot. Such is the case for Lily-Rose Depp, who made headlines this morning after attending last night’s Chanel Métiers d’Art show in an embellished pastel two-piece ensemble from the house’s Haute Couture collection. This sartorial win wasn’t the 15-year-old’s first, however. She’s been turning heads for months with her fully formed sense of style that harks back to her mom and dad’s ’90s heyday—think lots of denim, platforms, chokers, and Pulp Fiction references. For most, adolescence is a period of awkward fashion experimentation—you don’t know who you are, and it shows in the clothes. But increasingly, thanks to the Internet, teens (especially those with famously style-savvy parents) are making fashion choices that are both self-expressive and in tune with what’s happening in fashion on the whole. Less Silly Bandz and more Moschino, if you get the gist. Lily-Rose Depp might very well be on the road to joining the rankings of her father, Johnny Depp. The 16-year-old is starring in Yoga Hosers, a horror-comedy about two yoga-avid girls planning to go a senior party, but who have to face monstrous forces when everything goes wrong. The film's director, Kevin Smith, tells PEOPLE that Johnny, 52, met his match in working with his daughter. "It was adorable," he says. "There's a scene in an interrogation room between the two of them and they're actually trying to out act each other and it's really cute," Smith says. "Then Lily busts out some French – because she speaks French really fluently – and just shows him up." The film, which is a spin-off of Smith's Tusk, is a family affair for the director as well, with Smith's daughter Harley costarring with the Depps. Harley and Lily-Rose, who have known each other since kindergarten, had small roles in Tusk. "At the end of the day of filming Tusk, Johnny was like 'If we were smart we'd retire and live off these girls,' " Smith says. "I took that rather seriously." The film's producer, Kim Leadford from StarStream Entertainment, tells PEOPLE both of the girls "crushed it." "They really rose to the occasion, and I think this will be something that will definitely launch their careers," she says. Leadford says watching the Depps interact was "mind-blowing." "They have such a sweet and funny relationship," she says. "They're buddies and they're really sweet with each other." Depp's wife, Amber Heard, even came to set to surprise Lily with a dog during the holidays while filming. Among other familiar faces in the film are Lily's mom, Vanessa Paradis, and Justin Long. Smith says after 21 years of filmmaking, this is the most fun he's ever had. "The whole movie is a real charm factory," Smith says. "It's just charm city, particularly watching a father and daughter act with each other." lily-rose depp opens up about the media circus and her true passion We are built to admire. We crave it. There are plenty of stars and icons, yet we keep looking for the next one to fall from the sky (or our Instagram feeds). Like Lily-Rose Depp: 16 years-old, divine ancestry (she's Johnny Depp and Vanessa Paradis' daughter), heavenly cheekbones (well, yeah, she's Johnny Depp and Vanessa Paradis' daughter), celestial aura (she has the world's coolest social media presence and a burgeoning film career). She's a beautiful, modern little earth angel. Yet completely straightforward. As she tells us: "I grew up with the media circus. My whole life. My parents were very calm about the photographers, the fans, and all that. But I understood right away that I hadn't done anything to deserve that attention. No matter what happens, it will be there. I didn't choose it. You just can't take that too seriously. You need to live your life. And stay calm." Lily-Rose has calmness in spades when we meet her backstage after the Chanel runway show, surrounded by a circle of whimpering admirers. Not just any admirers, but it-girls in their own right like Kendall and Cara. All there to admire this divine child. Six months ago (an eternity in Internet Time), at the Chanel Métiers d'Art event, she made her first big appearance, in pastel. Since then, she's booked a Chanel campaign, as well as two major roles in French films (Rebecca Zlotowski's Planetarium with Natalie Portman and The Dancer with Soko). So she's a pro backstage at her third runway show. Lily-Rose smiles politely, her posture superstraight in a strapless top, her bun high on her head. Kaiser Karl keeps an eye on her from a distance, Vanessa keeps an eye on her from a bit closer. "For now, what I like most is making films," says Lily-Rose. When we ask if she plans on a long career in the cinema, she shrugs and smiles: "I'm a Gemini, very spontaneous. For now, I'm having fun doing it, we'll see what happens later." Nonchalantly, ever-lightly, she's making her own way in the world. Lily Rose by Willy Vanderperre for LOVE 15 Our cover star Lily Rose Depp talks Wizard of Oz, her dream director to work with and why she got into acting... At what age did you decide to become an actor? When I shot the scene in Tusk when I was 14. When and how was your first experience on set? It was on Tusk and it was so fun! That was when I realized I wanted to be an actor. I was also surrounded by friends and family so it was a great experience! What's the major difference between acting and modeling? Acting is more emotional What's your favourite movie? Judy Garland's Wizard of Oz Who would be the dream director to work with? Quentin Tarantino Where do you see your career progressing? I don't have any plans in particular, I just know this is what I want to do and I want to work hard at it, and hopefully keep finding roles as beautiful as the ones I've already been lucky enough to come across. LOVE's Editor-in-Chief, Katie Grand, says of her decision to put Lily on the cover: "This issue sees 16-year-old actress and Chanel model Lily-Rose Depp’s first cover and first proper interview. When her friend Stella Maxwell took over the LOVE Instagram and posted some jolly pictures of herself and Lily-Rose together, it struck me that she’d make a perfect LOVE cover star. I just love Lily-Rose – if she were a colour she’d be fluoro pink with yellow bits.” With the new issue, ‘LOVE Club’ out 8 February, LOVE today reveals some of the interview highlights, as the 16-year old daughter of Johnny Depp and Vanessa Paradis embarks on a career-defining year, with comedy horror Yoga Hosers having just premiered at Sundance Film Festival, and upcoming Planetarium, in which she stars opposite Natalie Portman, and The Dancer, in which she plays Isadora Duncan. On her budding acting career, she tells us: "I can act every single day because I love it; it’s just so liberating. It might be rare, but there are certain moments when you really don’t feel like yourself. When you are in the character so fully, it’s the best feeling ever. I so love it. Even if those moments come just once a day or every other day, they are just worth it." While her acting career has taken off, of course, the fashion world were quick to embrace the 16 year old. On Karl Lagerfeld being such a part of her life, she says: "Chanel has always been this big thing for me – there are baby pictures of me wearing my mom’s Chanel pumps. I have been lucky enough to know Karl since I was eight – yes, half my life. I have been so lucky to be around him and just talk to him. He makes people feel great. He is a presence. He’s very perceptive; I really feel like he understands people." Remember when Lily's Instagram was suddenly the account du jour? There were also a few fake ones, super weird."I first started using social media when I was 12 or something – not publicly, I had private accounts – but even since then people have been pretending to be me, and my brother. It’s so annoying. It’s super weird." What does she do to combat it? "The only thing I can do is let people know that is not me. My biggest fear is people reading something or seeing something on one of those fake accounts and thinking that came out of my mouth, when it didn’t. I am very specific about what I put out on social media about myself. But that’s also why I like social media, because it feels like the only thing that I have to control my own image. Everybody is going to say whatever the **** they are going to say about me – and it is like this for everybody." Lily goes onto to explain the perils of being on social media. "I would be much less stressed out without social media. I am constantly afraid of getting hacked. It’s like being afraid of stepping on glass." She concludes: "It is delicate being my age, and trying to do all the regular teenager stuff, and then having that in the spotlight. But I am grateful for what it brings and it is honestly a small price to pay to get to do what I want to do – I am very happy about that.” Read the full interview with Lily-Rose Depp in LOVE 15, the LOVE Club Issue for Spring/Summer 2016, which goes on newsstands 8 February. |
